The Mazda Way
Craftsmanship in Japan means more than the ability to make something. It stands for the pursuit of perfection – not in machine-like sense, but with the human touch at its centre. When master craftsmen, called “Takumi” in Japan, dedicate their lives to the creation of an object, they put a piece of their soul into it and thus bring it to life. In Japan, this approach is known as “Monotsukuri”. And this has been the guiding principle for Mazda from the beginning: Our Takumi do not make cars, they craft them. Mazda Apprentice Programme “Minarai”. In traditional Japanese contexts, “Minarai” is not just a job title—it’s a methodology covering these key areas:
Observation-first learning: Apprentices are expected to absorb techniques and behaviours by watching, often without explicit instruction.
Silent mentorship: The mentor may not actively teach but instead model excellence, leaving the apprentice to “steal with their eyes.”
Respect and humility: The apprentice shows deference and patience, recognising that mastery comes through quiet dedication and attentiveness.
At Mazda we work closely with our apprentices to ensure that they learn and master the subject areas and job roles to be high performers and passionate about perfection.
